Âme

Âme is the German duo of Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer. They met in Karlsruhe in the early 2000s, when Beyer was working at the Plattentasche record shop, and began producing together around a shared interest in Chicago house, Detroit techno, German electronics and a very specific idea of club music: long tension, melodies that stay in the memory and arrangements able to work both on and away from the dancefloor.

Their first releases were connected to the Sonar Kollektiv environment and to a German scene then looking for new ways to bring house, techno and more experimental electronics together. The turning point came in 2005 with Rej. The track became one of the defining titles in their catalogue and also served as an early calling card for Innervisions, the label Âme founded with Dixon that same year. Its impact lasted far beyond a single club season: Rej continued to appear in sets, reissues and compilations for years and helped establish a sensibility that would later be closely associated with the label.

Innervisions became the project's creative centre. Founded by Dixon, Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, the label developed a catalogue in which house, techno and electronic music coexist without rigid genre divisions. Âme released much of their own music there and helped build an ecosystem that also included the MTN Muting The Noise shop, the Temporary Secretary agency and the Lost In A Moment parties. That label work is inseparable from their artistic trajectory: much of their influence comes as much from their own records as from the judgement with which they have selected music, artists and contexts for Innervisions.

After Rej came tracks such as Asa, Tatischeff and Fiori, alongside numerous remixes that widened their language. Their reinterpretation of Howling is particularly notable, showing the duo's ability to turn a vocal composition into a club piece without stripping away its emotional weight. Their production is characterised by a measured use of harmony, sequences and crescendos, with influences ranging from Detroit and Chicago to krautrock, kosmische musik and different strands of European electronics.

In 2018 they released Dream House, their first full-length studio album, through Innervisions. Developed over several years, the record expanded their usual format across eleven tracks and vocal collaborations with Matthew Herbert, Gudrun Gut, Roedelius, Planningtorock and Jens Kuross. Dream House showed a side less dependent on club structures and more interested in songwriting, texture and home listening, while retaining the production precision that had defined their singles.

Âme's activity is also divided into two clearly distinct formats. Kristian Beyer performs most DJ sets under the Âme name, while Frank Wiedemann focuses on the live format, built around hardware, performance and real-time adaptations of the catalogue. They sometimes appear together, but the division has allowed the project to maintain a strong presence both in DJ booths and as a live act with its own identity.

More than two decades after their first work, Âme remain closely linked to Innervisions and maintain an international club and festival schedule. Their relevance within European house and techno rests on an unusual combination of production, DJing, live performance, label work and curation. Each area has fed the others, explaining why the project remains influential without relying solely on the historical impact of Rej.
