Moodymann

Moodymann is the alias of Kenny Dixon Jr., a Detroit producer and DJ whose work has connected house, soul, jazz, funk and the city's Black musical history since the early 1990s. He founded KDJ Records in 1994 and built a highly personal catalogue around samples, instrumentation, vocals and deliberately raw production. Albums including Silentintroduction, Mahogany Brown and Forevernevermore established a recognisable language of low-slung grooves, soul arrangements and an unusually free approach to house structure. Dixon is also part of 3 Chairs with Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman, and runs Mahogani Music as a parallel platform. His recent activity retains that same editorial independence through catalogue work, selective performances and a direct creative relationship with Detroit.
