Burning Man names Spellbound as its 2027 Black Rock City theme

Burning Man has revealed Spellbound as the theme for Black Rock City 2027. The temporary city will return to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert from 29 August to 6 September, with the new theme framing next year’s art, camps and participatory projects around ideas of magic, coincidence and collective imagination.

Spellbound gives artists a loose brief, not a dress code

Burning Man themes work best as prompts rather than instructions. The organisation describes Spellbound through enchantment, impossible ideas, inherited beliefs and moments of unexpected connection. In practice, that gives artists and camps a broad visual and conceptual field without forcing the city into one literal aesthetic.

The music remains decentralised

For electronic music audiences, Burning Man is often discussed through DJ sets that escape the playa and circulate online afterwards. The event itself still operates without a conventional festival lineup. Sound camps programme independently, and music sits alongside large-scale art, mutant vehicles, workshops and the temporary infrastructure built by participants.

That distinction is worth keeping in view as the event gets closer. Big-name sets will inevitably attract attention, but the theme announcement concerns the wider city and the creative framework behind it. There is no official artist bill to report and no useful reason to treat rumoured DJ appearances as programming.

Planning starts a year out

Burning Man has already opened its 2027 planning resources and ticket-update registration. Art, camp and infrastructure preparation begins long before the gates open, especially for projects that need engineering, fundraising and transport into the desert.
