Alexander Kowalski

Alexander Kowalski is a German producer, DJ and live act closely connected to the history of Berlin techno. Born in Greifswald in 1978 and later raised in Berlin, he began experimenting with electronic music during the 1990s, at a time when the city was going through one of the most significant cultural transformations in its history.

Influenced by Detroit techno and artists such as Joey Beltram, Kowalski started producing with modest equipment before becoming part of Berlin's scene. His first work appeared under the DisX3 alias, a project through which he released music within the Tresor environment and developed a rawer, more functional sound aimed at the dancefloor.

His career accelerated in the early 2000s through Kanzleramt Records. Albums including Echoes (2001), Progress (2002) and Response established a recognisable style in which Berlin techno met melody, deep atmospheres and a strong Detroit influence. Later releases such as Changes and Cycles broadened his sound towards more melodic territory, dub, house and electro while retaining a techno foundation.

Kowalski also became particularly known for his live performances, using hardware and building sets around his own productions rather than limiting himself to a traditional DJ format.

After almost three decades he remains active from Berlin, alternating his work as Alexander Kowalski with projects including DisX3 and developing new music through Cycles Music, his current label.

His ability to combine club impact with depth, melody and highly detailed production has made him one of the longest-running figures from the generation that helped define Berlin techno from the late 1990s onwards.
