Jeff Mills

Jeff Mills is one of the fundamental figures of Detroit techno and one of the artists who has pushed the genre furthest beyond a strictly club context. Born in Detroit in 1963, he began developing his DJ technique during the city's early electronic expansion. His precision and speed behind the decks made him a regular presence on local radio under the name The Wizard. Those fast, physical sessions, constructed almost as performances, anticipated a way of DJing that would become one of his defining traits.

Before starting his solo career, Mills was part of Final Cut and later joined Mike Banks in the formation of Underground Resistance, a collective central to the second major wave of Detroit techno. His time in UR was relatively brief, but it established an understanding of electronic music based on independence, technology and a future-facing perspective that has remained present throughout his work.

In 1992 he founded Axis Records. The label became the platform through which Mills developed his own conception of techno: minimal, hypnotic, precise and deeply connected to ideas about science, space, time and human evolution. Records and projects released over the following decades turned his fascination with science fiction into a structural part of his work rather than an added aesthetic.

That outlook also explains why his career has continually moved between the dancefloor and other formats. In 2000 he created a new score for Fritz Lang's Metropolis and later developed numerous cine-mixes and audiovisual works. With The Exhibitionist, he translated his DJ technique into a cinematic format in which hands, turntables and machines became part of the visual narrative.

Mills has also taken techno into the symphonic field. In 2005 he presented Blue Potential with the Orchestre National de Montpellier, beginning a line of orchestral work that continued with projects including Light From The Outside World and his musical reinterpretation of The Planets. He has also developed residencies and projects with institutions including the Louvre in Paris and the Barbican Centre in London, alongside installations, film and work where electronics, art and science continually intersect.

Collaboration has been another constant. He has worked with musicians from jazz, classical music and other traditions, including Tony Allen, with whom he developed Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. After the Nigerian drummer's death, Mills continued the concept with new musicians. With keyboard player Jean-Phi Dary he also created The Paradox, a project centred on improvisation and dialogue between electronics and jazz.

Space remains one of the major engines of his work. Axis has spent years releasing projects inspired by planets, space exploration, astrophysics and future scenarios, while projects such as The Outer Limits, produced for NTS with NASA participation, carried those ideas into radio. For Mills, futurism functions as part of the method through which he asks what techno can be and how far it can extend.

In 2026 he released The Trip To Vega through Axis Records, an eleven-part concept album imagining a human expedition to the Vega system in 2097. The record continues a creative line Mills has explored for decades: using techno as a narrative tool for thinking about worlds that do not yet exist.

More than forty years after his first steps as a DJ, Jeff Mills continues to work from a position difficult to reduce to one label. DJ, producer, composer, audiovisual artist and founder of Axis, his trajectory directly connects the history of Detroit techno with some of the genre's most experimental later possibilities.
